Identification Techniques
There are a number of ways to identify those hawk species that are found in the Niagara region. To distinguish between them, it is important to note that each species has a unique pattern and colour of plumage. This will help you identify hawks in photos, or if you are lucky enough to get close to one. Additionally, each species has a characteristic style of flight, and behaviour during hunting and nesting. This method of identification is useful when viewing a hawk in flight, or from a great distance. Finally, each species vocalizes differently. You can use the shrill cries and screams to distinguish between hawks that are not visible at all. For example, those hiding at the tops of trees, or flying above the tree canopy that you might be hiking under.
